Part of the joy of dining out is the experience of being pampered: Eating food prepared and served by others in elegant surroundings is without a doubt one of life's sweetest indulgences. It is, not, however, what draws us to Udupi Bhavan, a vegetarian Indian restaurant tucked between Big Kev's Downhome Kitchen and Whiskey Pete's Beverage Mart in a Saybrook Road strip mall. The meal is self-service, the cutlery is plastic, and I know fast-food dining rooms with more charm. But the old adage of never judging a book by its cover was never more true here.
