On The Fly: Mets' Wilpon Doing His Best Bulworth Impersonation
So we learn from a sprawling profile of Fred Wilpon in The New Yorker that the Mets owner thinks Carlos Beltran is overpaid, David Wright is not a superstar and Jose Reyes doesn't deserve a $140 million contract. Yes, the Bernie Madoff scandal has turned Mr. Wilpon into Mr. Bulworth. ... You'd think Julio Lugo would take the $36 million he swiped from the Red Sox and enjoy his retirement. But after receiving no offers after his contract expired last year, Lugo found a sucker; the Braves signed the shortstop to a minor league contract. This is bad news for Braves pitchers and great news for the rest of the NL East.
